Tips to Keep Your Weave Looking Fresh

Not properly caring for your weave can not only leave your hair looking (and smelling!) less than optimal but it can actually damage your real hair beneath. Of course it is important to keep your hair shampooed and conditioned, but there are a few other tricks to keep your weave looking fresh as the day you had it installed! We also have some very handy tips to relieve an itchy scalp when wearing a weave.

Co-Washing: Cleansing your hair with popular cleansing conditioners will keep your hair extensions free from product buildup and keep your hair beneath clean and moisturized. The awesome thing about these new, gentle sulfate-free formulas is that they clean while conditioning your hair in one step, saving you time and being safe to use as often as every day if you like.

Allow your hair to completely dry: Nothing good results from keeping anything perpetually wet - eventually it begins to smell and becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and other undesirable things. Make sure to sit beneath a hooded dryer or spend time outdoors during summer months to allow your braided hair and scalp to completely dry after washing.

Sleep on Satin: Silk and satin pillowcases are an absolute must have, not only for your weave but your real hair as well. These fabrics create less friction and are less absorbent than cotton which means they will not dry out or roughen the hair's cuticles.

Braid or Twist at Night: Sleeping with your weave loose provides an opportunity for tangles to form and the resulting detangling session you will have to do not only causes frizz, but also the dreaded shedding. Braid or twist the length of your weave nightly to avoid tangling and as an added bonus you will have some gorgeous beach waves the next day!

None of this little tips are time consuming at all but can make all the difference in helping you to keep your weave looking fresh!

The Complete Weave Freshness Guide

A weave that's been in for three weeks can look just as fresh as day one - or it can look tired and neglected. The difference is entirely in how you maintain it. Here's everything you need to know.

"A weave that's properly maintained for six weeks looks better than a weave that's neglected for two. The investment in the hair is only half the equation - what you do between installation and removal is just as important to the final result."

Week-by-Week Weave Maintenance

Week 1-2: The install is fresh. Focus on establishing your routine: scalp oil every 3 days, satin bonnet every night, wash the scalp (not the weave hair) at the end of week 2.

Week 3-4: New growth is beginning to show. Retwist or neaten any visible tracks. Moisturize the scalp more frequently if itching starts. Wash and deep condition the weft hair midway through this period.

Week 5-6: Significant new growth. This is where edge protection becomes most important - the growth at the hairline puts increasing tension. Keep edges moisturized and avoid tight styles that add additional pull. Plan your takedown appointment.

How to Wash a Weave Without Ruining It

Washing technique is where most weave damage happens. The right approach:

Dilute sulfate-free shampoo in an applicator bottle. Apply directly to the scalp in sections, working the shampoo into the scalp with your fingertips (not nails). Let it rinse through the weave naturally as you rinse - don't scrub the weft hair itself. Apply conditioner to the weft lengths only (not the scalp or near the cornrows). Rinse thoroughly. Gently squeeze - never rub - excess water from the weft. Sit under a hooded dryer or air dry completely before covering with a bonnet.

Edge Protection Throughout the Wear Period

Edges are the most vulnerable area during a weave. They sit at the highest-tension point of the install and have the least hair to buffer that tension. Apply a lightweight edge oil or serum to the hairline every time you moisturize. Avoid tight styles like high ponytails that pull on the edges. If your edges feel sore or look thinned, consider taking the weave down early rather than pushing through the damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you keep a weave looking silky?

The keys to maintaining silk and shine in weave hair: wash with sulfate-free shampoo and moisturizing conditioner every 1-2 weeks, apply a small amount of argan oil to the weft lengths after washing, avoid heat styling without protection, sleep in a satin bonnet every night, and deep condition the weft hair monthly. The cuticle-intact structure of quality Remy hair maintains its natural shine when these habits are consistent.

How often should you wash your weave?

Every 1-2 weeks is the right frequency for most weave wearers. Washing less frequently causes scalp buildup and potential odor. Washing more frequently can dry out the weft hair and loosen the braided foundation faster. If you work out frequently, rinse your scalp more often between full wash sessions.

How long can you keep a weave in?

6-8 weeks maximum with proper care. After 8 weeks, new growth puts increasing tension at the roots that can cause traction alopecia. Even if the weave still looks presentable, take it down before the 8-week mark and give your natural hair a recovery period before reinstalling.
