How To Customize Your Frontal Or Closure

Wigs and weaves are great protective styles to help grow your hair and give it a break from harsh weather conditions, heat styling and excessive use of products resulting in build up. Thanks to the creation of closures and frontals, you can now achieve a natural look without leaving any of your own hair out! Our lace frontals and natural hair closures are created to look as natural as possible, however, they can be customized further to make it look like your own hairline. Here are a few tips and tricks to make the most out of your frontals and closures.

Wet & Blow Dry Hair

Get your hair piece to lay as flat as possible by creating the part where you’d like, wetting the area and blow drying it with a brush. This will ensure that your hair piece will stay flat as well as keep the part in place. For additional hold, add leave in conditioner or hair mousse to tame any flyaways.

Pluck & Add Concealer/Eyeshadow To Part

Some women enjoy a slightly thicker part than what can naturally be achieved on the hairpiece. If you would like a thicker part, have a stylist pluck some of the hair out of your unit. Your part should be no larger than a centimeter wide. Some women prefer to attempt plucking at home, however, we do not recommend this, as over-plucking can occur and it is irreversible. Another simple trick is adding concealer to your part to hide the lace. A powder concealer or eyeshadow is recommended over liquid concealer as the liquid may stain the lace. Create/Lay Down Baby Hairs

To make your hairline more believable, you can have a stylist create some imitation baby hairs that they can style how you’d like. Baby hairs help to define the hairline and give the illusion that the hair is growing from your scalp.

How to Customize Your Frontal or Closure for a Natural Look

The difference between a frontal or closure that looks obviously fake and one that looks completely undetectable comes down to customization. Straight out of the package, most frontals and closures are too dense and uniform-looking at the hairline. Here's how to make them look natural.

"A well-customized frontal is one of the most transformative things in hair. The process takes time - bleaching the knots, plucking the hairline, and styling - but the result is a hairline that genuinely looks like it's growing from the scalp. It's worth every minute of the process."

- Priyanka Swamy, Founder of Perfect Locks

Step 1: Bleach the Knots

The small dark dots visible through the lace are the knots where hair is tied to the lace base. Bleaching these knots makes them disappear against the skin, creating the illusion that hair is growing from the scalp.

Apply a bleach mixture (bleach powder mixed with developer, typically 20-30 volume) to the underside of the lace using a brush. Wrap in plastic wrap and process for 20-40 minutes, checking every 10 minutes. The knots should lighten to a light brown or near-blonde. Rinse thoroughly, shampoo, and deep condition.

Important: Do a strand test first, and never over-bleach. Over-processed knots cause shedding. Check every 10 minutes and rinse as soon as the knots are light enough.

Step 2: Pluck the Hairline

Factory frontals are made with maximum density throughout, including right at the hairline. Natural hairlines gradually get less dense toward the edge - they're not a straight wall of hair. Plucking replicates this natural density gradient.

Using tweezers, remove individual hairs from the perimeter of the hairline - working from the outermost edge inward. Focus most of the plucking at the very edge (removing more) and gradually less as you move back. The temples and center part area typically need the most plucking. Less is more at first - you can always pluck more but you can't add hair back.

Step 3: Apply and Blend

Apply a thin layer of wig adhesive or lace glue to your hairline and allow it to become tacky before pressing the lace down. Press firmly along the entire hairline for 30-60 seconds. For the most natural blend:

Apply a small amount of foundation or concealer matching your skin tone over the lace using a sponge. This further eliminates the visible lace line. Style baby hairs at the edges using a small brush and edge control for the most natural-looking hairline. Use your fingertip and a tiny amount of concealer to blend any remaining visible lace.

Caring for Your Frontal or Closure

Frontals and closures from our human hair collection are made from the same 100% Remy Indian hair as our extensions. Wash every 7-10 wears with sulfate-free shampoo. Remove adhesive gently using a dedicated lace adhesive remover - never pull. Air dry on a wig stand. Apply argan oil to the hair lengths (not the lace) to maintain softness and shine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a frontal and a closure?

A closure is a small hairpiece (typically 4x4 or 5x5 inches) placed at the crown or part area to close off a sew-in installation. A frontal covers the entire front hairline from ear to ear, allowing more styling versatility including side parts anywhere across the top. Frontals give more flexibility; closures are more affordable and easier to maintain.

How do you make a frontal look natural?

Three steps: bleach the knots (so the dark dots where hair ties to lace become invisible), pluck the hairline (to create a natural density gradient rather than a uniform wall of hair), and apply foundation or concealer over the lace for a skin-like appearance. Baby hair styling at the edges completes the natural illusion.

How long do frontals last?

A quality human hair frontal with proper care lasts 12-18 months. The lace itself typically has a shorter lifespan than the hair and may need to be replaced before the hair wears out. Gentle adhesive removal (always using a dedicated remover, never pulling), careful washing, and proper storage on a wig stand extend longevity significantly.

Can you swim or sweat in a frontal?

Most lace adhesives are water resistant but not waterproof. Significant sweating during exercise can loosen the bond over time, and swimming is not recommended. If you're active, lace tape (rather than liquid adhesive) tends to hold better through light moisture. Rinse and reapply adhesive after any significant water exposure.
