Bohemian style, as it was originally called, was always a fashion style linked with relaxed and original hairstyles, clothes and accessories. It was a ‘natural’ look even before natural, rural themes became a major trend in our eco-aware century! Based originally on the traditional styles of Bohemian village-women, Boho hairstyles and fashion clothes have become a favorite amongst 21st century women of all ages. It’s also incredibly easy to create with a barrel iron and Perfect Locks Clip-In hair extensions! These laid-back loose, flowing curls and a hint of eye-liner creates a delightfully carefree look for autumn that is always on trend. After applying your Perfect Locks Extensions as usual, here’s how to style them into stunning boho braids:
Step 1
Part the hair into the middle and dispense a flexible hold mousse of your choice with a little Perfect Locks Inspire Silk Serum throughout the hair and blow dry in inch wide sections with a large round brush concentrating on applying root volume.
Step 2
Take inch long sections either side of the part and French braid the hair forward and continue down the full length of the hair and fasten with a clear elastic.

Step 3
After you have finished the plaits, take long vertical sections spray with PERFECT LOCKS Inspire Leave-In Conditioner and curl towards the face, clipping up the curl as you go and allow them to set. Use a round barrel curling iron or a wider wand.
Step 4
After the curls have set in clip them and brush through with a large Denman dressing out brush to create that softer wave.
Step 5
When the curls are dressed out take both plaits and pull them out to give them a wider appearance and grip them to the back of the head just below the crown.
Step 6
Give the whole style a light mist of a flexible hold hair spray to finish.
Boho Braid Techniques with Extensions
The effortless boho braid look is one of the most popular extension styles because it works with natural texture, requires minimal heat, and photographs beautifully. Here's how to achieve it.
"Boho braids work so well with extensions because the looseness and texture of the style actually makes the blend easier than sleeker styles. A little intentional messiness hides any transition point between your natural hair and the extension hair beautifully."
- Priyanka Swamy, Founder of Perfect Locks
Creating Boho Braids with Clip-In Extensions
Add texture first
Boho braids look best on textured, not freshly washed hair. If your hair is very clean and smooth, add a texturizing spray or dry shampoo at the roots first. Second-day hair is actually ideal for this style.
Clip in your extensions loosely
Install your clip-in extensions throughout the sections you'll be braiding. For a loose boho braid, you don't need all the wefts - focus on the sections that will be most visible in the final style.
Braid loosely
Begin your braid - whether a three-strand, fishtail, or Dutch braid - keeping the tension deliberately loose throughout. Tight braids look polished; loose braids look boho. Aim for a relaxed, lived-in texture rather than neatness.
Pull and loosen
After braiding, gently pull individual sections of the braid outward to loosen and widen it. This is the step that creates the effortless, voluminous boho appearance. Pull from the sides and top of the braid, not the center, to avoid unraveling.
Add face-framing pieces
Pull a few loose pieces from around the face to frame it. These tendrils - slightly wavy or curled with your fingers - complete the boho aesthetic and make the style look intentionally undone rather than accidental.
Frequently Asked Questions
What extensions work best for boho braids?
Wavy or slightly textured extensions blend most naturally into boho braid styles because the texture matches the intentionally undone aesthetic. Straight extensions also work well - the braid structure adds its own texture. Curly extensions can be used but may need to be loosely straightened first to braid effectively.
How do you make a braid look boho?
Three things: braid loosely (not tightly), pull individual sections outward after braiding to create width and volume, and leave face-framing pieces loose. The intentionally undone look comes from deliberate loosening after the braid is formed, not from braiding sloppily.
