U-tip extensions use individual keratin bonds shaped like a small nail to attach seamlessly to your natural hair. With the right care routine, these bonds stay secure and the hair stays beautiful for months.

How U-Tip Bonds Work

Each strand is attached to a small section of your natural hair using heat to fuse the keratin tip. The bonds are strong and secure, but they can be weakened by oil, certain chemicals, and excessive heat. Your care routine should focus on keeping the bonds intact while maintaining the quality of the extension hair.

The First Few Days

Give your bonds 48-72 hours to fully set before washing. Avoid heavy sweating, steam, swimming, or getting your hair thoroughly wet during this time. If you need to freshen up, you can use dry shampoo on your scalp only.

Washing

Wash every 2-3 days to balance keeping your scalp clean without stripping moisture from the extensions. When washing, keep your head upright and let water flow down from your scalp. Never flip your head upside down - this tangles the extension hair around the bonds, creating mats that are painful to remove and can damage your natural hair.

Apply sulfate-free shampoo to your scalp and gently massage with your fingertips. Let the suds run through the lengths as you rinse - don't scrub or bunch the hair at the mid-lengths where your bonds are located. Follow with a lightweight conditioner on the ends only, staying at least 2 inches below the lowest bonds. Heavy conditioners near the bonds can cause them to slip.

Rinse extremely thoroughly. Take longer than you think you need - any residue near the bonds weakens them over time.

Drying

Squeeze water out gently with a soft towel. Never rub or twist the hair. Air drying is ideal, but if you need to blow dry, use low to medium heat and keep the dryer moving. Don't concentrate heat on any one area, especially near the bonds - prolonged high heat can soften keratin.

Most importantly, never sleep with wet hair. Moisture trapped at the bonds overnight can make them gummy or cause slippage.

Brushing

This is the most important thing you can do for your U-tip extensions. Brush at least 2-3 times daily with a loop brush or extension-safe brush. The loops are designed to glide over the bonds without snagging, while still detangling the hair.

Focus extra attention on problem areas: the nape of your neck, behind your ears, and the underneath layers where hair naturally tangles. Hold the hair near the bonds with one hand while brushing with the other so you're not pulling on the attachment points.

Always brush dry or nearly-dry hair. Start at the ends and work up in small sections, never pulling through tangles. Before bed, do a thorough brushing session and then secure hair in a loose braid or low ponytail.

What Damages Bonds

Keep away from the bonds: oils (including argan, coconut, and other hair oils), products with sulfates, products with alcohol, heavy conditioners and masks, and prolonged exposure to chlorine and salt water.

Safe to use: sulfate-free shampoo, lightweight leave-in conditioner on ends, heat protectant spray, water-based styling products, and dry shampoo on scalp only (alcohol-free formulas).

Heat Styling

Your U-tip extensions can absolutely be heat styled - they're 100% human hair. Use heat protectant before any hot tools, and keep temperatures at 300-350 degrees. The one caution is to avoid clamping hot tools directly on the keratin bonds. The bonds can handle incidental heat, but a flat iron clamped directly on a bond will soften and potentially melt it. Stay at least an inch above the bond when straightening or curling.

Swimming and Sweating

Chlorine and salt water aren't great for keratin bonds. If you swim, wet your hair with clean water first and apply a leave-in conditioner to create a barrier. Keep your hair braided and above water as much as possible. Rinse immediately after and wash with a clarifying shampoo.

For workouts, pull hair back in a low braid or ponytail. After exercising, let your hair and scalp dry completely before putting it back up - sweat trapped at the bonds can cause them to break down.

Sleep Routine

Always brush thoroughly before bed, then secure in a loose braid or soft ponytail. Avoid anything tight that pulls on the bonds. Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase - the smooth surface creates less friction than cotton, preventing tangles and reducing stress on the bonds.

Checking Your Bonds

Every few days, run your fingers along your bonds to check their condition. Healthy bonds feel firm and smooth. If any feel soft, sticky, or loose, contact your stylist - catching a slipping bond early can prevent hair loss.

Maintenance and Removal

U-tip extensions typically last 3-4 months before needing removal and reinstallation. As your hair grows, the bonds move down, becoming more visible and putting stress on your natural hair. Stick to your stylist's recommended timeline.

Never attempt to remove bonds yourself. Cutting, pulling, or using household products can seriously damage your natural hair. Your stylist will use a professional keratin bond remover that dissolves the bonds safely, leaving your natural hair undamaged and ready for a new set if desired.
