Before You Begin

Unlike other extensions that come ready to wear, bulk hair benefits from a good wash before installation. This removes any residue from processing and lets you see the hair's true texture. Soak the hair in cool water with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo for 5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly, apply a hydrating conditioner from mid-length to ends, and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse with cool water to seal the cuticle. Lay flat on a towel and allow to air dry completely - this can take several hours depending on the length and texture.

For Braided Styles

Once your braids are installed, your care routine shifts to protecting both your natural hair and the extensions. Wash every 1-2 weeks using a diluted shampoo mixture - about one part sulfate-free shampoo to three parts water. Apply directly to your scalp using a squeeze bottle, then gently massage with your fingernails (not fingertips, which can cause frizz). Let the suds run down through the braids as you rinse. Never pile braids on top of your head or scrub them together.

Follow with a lightweight leave-in conditioner or braid spray. Focus on your scalp to prevent dryness and itching, then lightly mist the length of your braids. Heavy oils can cause buildup, so stick to lighter formulas.

Drying

Drying is critical - braids that stay damp can develop mildew and odor. After washing, gently squeeze sections with a microfiber towel, then sit under a hooded dryer on low heat until completely dry, or allow several hours for air drying. Never go to bed with damp braids.

Nighttime Protection

Your nighttime routine makes a huge difference in how long your style lasts. Wrap your braids in a satin or silk scarf, or use a satin bonnet. If your braids are long, you can loosely gather them into a low ponytail before wrapping. Alternatively, sleep on a satin pillowcase - though wrapping provides more protection.

Scalp Care

Don't neglect your scalp while wearing braids. Apply a light scalp oil every few days to prevent dryness and itching. Tea tree oil mixed with a carrier oil can help if you experience any irritation. If you notice excessive itching, flaking, or bumps, it may be time to remove the style.

When to Take Down Your Style

With proper care, braided styles using bulk hair typically last 6-8 weeks. Don't leave them in longer hoping to extend the style - this can lead to matting at the root and damage to your natural hair. Signs it's time to remove: significant new growth (more than an inch), excessive frizz that can't be tamed, or any discomfort.

For Wig Making and Fusion

If you're using bulk hair to create a wig or fusion extensions, store unused portions in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep the hair in its natural direction - never flip or invert strands, as this misaligns the cuticle and causes tangling.
