Understanding Your Bonds

Each I-tip strand is attached using a small keratin bond about the size of a grain of rice. These bonds are strong but can be weakened by heat, oil, and certain ingredients. Your care routine should focus on keeping the bonds secure while maintaining the beauty of the hair.

The First 48-72 Hours

Don't wash your hair for at least 48-72 hours after installation. This allows the bonds to fully set. Avoid sweating heavily, swimming, or getting your hair wet during this time. If you absolutely must get your hair wet, keep it to a quick rinse without any products.

Washing

Wash your hair every 2-3 days - not daily, which can dry out both the extensions and your natural hair, but not less frequently, which allows oil buildup to break down the bonds. When washing, stand upright in the shower and let the water run down from your head. Never flip your head over, as this tangles the strands around the bonds.

Use a sulfate-free shampoo and focus on your scalp, gently massaging with your fingertips. Let the shampoo rinse through the lengths - don't pile the hair up or scrub the mid-lengths where the bonds are located. Follow with a lightweight conditioner on the ends only, at least 2 inches below the bonds. Heavy conditioner near the bonds can cause them to slip.

Rinse extremely thoroughly. Any product residue near the bonds weakens them over time.

Drying

Gently squeeze water out with a soft towel - never rub or twist. Let your hair air dry whenever possible. If you need to blow dry, use a low to medium heat setting and keep the dryer moving - don't focus heat on any one spot, especially near the bonds. High, concentrated heat can soften and damage keratin.

Never go to sleep with wet hair. The moisture gets trapped at the bonds and can cause them to become gummy or slip.

Brushing

Brush your extensions at least 2-3 times per day with a loop brush or soft-bristle extension brush. This is crucial for preventing matting at the bonds. The areas that need the most attention are the nape of your neck, behind your ears, and anywhere hair naturally rubs against itself or your clothing.

Always brush dry or nearly-dry hair - wet hair is more fragile and stretches more easily. Hold the hair near the bonds with one hand while brushing with the other to avoid pulling on the attachment points. Start at the ends and work up in small sections, gently working through any tangles.

At night, do a thorough brushing before bed. Secure your hair in a loose braid or soft ponytail to prevent tangling while you sleep.

Products to Avoid

Stay away from products containing oil, alcohol, or sulfates near your bonds. This includes most volumizing products and many dry shampoos, argan oil and other hair oils (use only on ends, well below bonds), any conditioner or mask applied near the roots, and products containing ethyl alcohol or other strong alcohols.

Safe products include sulfate-free shampoo, lightweight leave-in conditioner (ends only), heat protectant spray, water-based styling products, and alcohol-free dry shampoo on the scalp only.

Heat Styling

You can curl, straighten, and blow dry your I-tip extensions without issue - they're 100% human hair. Always use heat protectant before styling. Keep tools between 300-350 degrees and avoid direct contact between hot tools and the keratin bonds. The bonds can withstand incidental heat, but clamping a flat iron directly on a bond can cause it to soften or melt.

Swimming and Exercise

Avoid submerging your bonds in chlorinated or salt water for extended periods. If you swim, wet your hair with clean water first and apply a leave-in conditioner as a protective barrier. Wear your hair in a braid and keep it above water when possible. Immediately after swimming, rinse thoroughly and wash with clarifying shampoo.

For workouts, secure your hair in a low braid or ponytail. After exercising, let your scalp and bonds dry completely before putting your hair up - trapped sweat can break down the keratin.

Sleeping

Always brush before bed and secure your hair in a loose braid or low ponytail. Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction. Avoid tight ponytails or buns that put stress on the bonds.

Maintenance and Removal

I-tip extensions typically last 3-4 months before needing removal and reinstallation. As your hair grows, the bonds move further from your scalp, which can make them visible and put stress on your natural hair. Don't try to extend the wear time beyond what your stylist recommends.

When it's time for removal, always have it done professionally. Your stylist will use a bond remover solution to safely break down the keratin without damaging your natural hair. Never try to pull, cut, or remove bonds yourself.

Checking Your Bonds

Between appointments, periodically check your bonds by gently running your fingers along them. If any feel loose, overly soft, or if you notice unusual shedding, contact your stylist before your scheduled maintenance.
