How Big Is the Hair Extension Market?

Published estimates of the market's size vary widely, and the variation is almost entirely a question of scope: whether a report counts extensions alone, extensions plus wigs, or the full artificial hair integration category. Rather than pick one number, here is how the major research firms currently size it:

The global hair extension market grows from 2.87 billion US dollars in 2025 and 3.05 billion in 2026 to 5.54 billion by 2034, per Fortune Business Insights. Perfect Locks has sold ethically sourced Remy human hair extensions since 2007. To show how consumer demand has actually shifted, we analyzed our own US order data across two matching 12-month windows: September 2019 through August 2020, and September 2025 through August 2026, covering more than 16,000 orders. Figures are shares of extension method revenue, so they are independent of our overall growth.

The professional shift: salon methods now dominate

  • Salon-installed methods (tape-in, weft, and fusion) grew from 63% of our extension revenue in 2019-20 to 74% in 2025-26.
  • Ready-to-wear clip-in methods fell from 22% to 14% of revenue over the same period, even as the clip-in category itself evolved (see the seamless shift below).
  • Wigs fell from 10% to 5% of extension revenue, consistent with wig demand migrating to specialist wig retailers.

The weft revolution: hand-tied and hybrid take over

  • Weft extensions are our largest method category at 33% of extension revenue in 2025-26, up from 29% in 2019-20.
  • Within the weft category, the construction mix has inverted: hand-tied and hybrid wefts grew from 29% of weft revenue to 64%, while machine weft fell from 68% to 33%.
  • Hand-tied weft revenue alone more than doubled (up 112%) between the two periods.
  • Hybrid weft, a category that did not exist in 2019, now generates more revenue for us than several legacy methods combined.

The invisibility premium: seamless construction is the fastest-growing product attribute

  • Invisible and seamless constructions (Invisi tape-ins and seamless clip-ins) grew from 0% of our extension revenue in 2019-20 to 15% in 2025-26. Neither product type existed in our catalog six years ago.
  • Within clip-ins specifically, seamless construction now accounts for roughly 44% of clip-in revenue.
  • Halo extensions have effectively replaced the older clip-in volumizer category, at roughly 3% of extension revenue.

Perfect Locks analysis of US search demand data (Ahrefs) shows the same professionalization trend appearing in what consumers type into Google:

  • Generic "weft hair extensions" searches overtook "hand-tied extensions" searches in 2026, after hand-tied peaked as a search term in 2022. Consumers increasingly search the category, then choose a construction.
  • Genius weft is the fastest-compounding method search in the category: near zero search volume in 2021, with growth compounding every year through 2026.
  • Hybrid weft search interest appears to have peaked, while machine weft search demand has stayed flat, mirroring the revenue mix shift in our sales data.

Consumer and Product Statistics

  • Human hair extensions remain the largest product segment globally, and the fastest growing in the US at a 7.12% CAGR (Fortune Business Insights).
  • Women remain the majority of extension buyers, but the male segment is projected to reach USD 748 million globally by 2035 (Market Research Future), driven largely by hair loss coverage.
  • Demand for curly and textured hair extensions continues to grow as more consumers match extensions to natural curl patterns, one of the fastest-growing product categories in the market.

Methodology

Perfect Locks proprietary figures are calculated from internal Shopify sales data covering more than 16,000 US orders across two matching 12-month windows (September 2019 to August 2020, and September 2025 to August 2026). Shares are percentages of core extension method revenue (tape-in, weft, clip-in, halo, fusion, wigs, toppers, bulk hair), excluding accessories, tools, hair care, and clearance. Search demand figures are based on Perfect Locks analysis of Ahrefs US keyword data, 2021 to 2026. Third-party market figures are cited to their original published sources with links.
