The general guideline: don't add more than 4-6 inches of length beyond your natural hair in a single step for the most natural-looking result. If your natural hair is at chin length (roughly 8-10 inches), extensions in the 14-16 inch range create a believable shoulder-length to mid-back result. Jumping directly to 22 inches on chin-length hair creates an obvious visual discontinuity.
