Did you know that sleep plays a huge part in your daily functioning? Every day sleep gives your brain the energy it needs to function and the precious night hours provide time for your skin, hair, and body to recuperate. The night time is also when you should be taking care of yourself, which means applying proper beauty treatment to your face and hair.

If you have hair extensions you don’t really need to apply any special product to your hair every night, besides an occasional deep conditioning treatment in the shower. You do however need to make sure that after you’re done washing your hair that it dries before going to bed. The reason why is if you go to sleep with wet hair your strands of hair will rub against one another, creating hair damage and breakage. To prevent braided hair for sleepthis from happening shower after work or earlier in the afternoon on the weekends to give your locks enough time to air dry. As we’ve discussed several times before, only blow dry your hair extensions if you are in a rush because the heat from the hair dryer will also cause unneeded damage to your tresses.

After your hair is dry and you are ready to hit the sack there are a few suggestions that we have so that your locks stay in excellent condition.

Wear a lose braid to sleep in to prevent hair tangling.

Wearing a lose braid keeps your locks all in one place and also keeps your hair in tact so that it won’t rub against other hair strands, creating split ends. Remember to make sure your hair is dry though and when you wake up in the morning and take the braid out your hair, you will have gentle waves. You are all set to go to work or get your day started!

Use a satin pillowcase to guard your hair against matting!

Not only will a satin pillowcase be comfy for your head to lie down on, but it also will keep your locks from being harmed from a rough surface! The idea is to treat your locks with extra T.L.C., which means going the distance to maintain their natural luster and beauty. A satin pillow definitely will keep your hair in tip top shape.

Sounds pretty simple, right? We think so and we definitely think your locks are worth it. Keep them perfect and follow these simple tips and have a great night’s rest full of sweet dreams.

How to Protect Your Extensions While Sleeping

"Sleep is where most extension damage happens - and most of our customers don't realize it until they notice their extensions tangling more than they should or losing their luster faster than expected. Eight hours of friction against the wrong surface, repeated nightly, is genuinely damaging. The fix is simple and inexpensive."

The Best Ways to Sleep with Extensions

Remove clip-ins every night: The clearest advice for clip-in wearers. Clip-ins aren't designed for overnight wear - the clips create pressure points on the scalp during sleep and the hair tangles from movement. Removing takes 2 minutes and dramatically extends the life of the extension hair.

Satin or silk pillowcase: For semi-permanent extension wearers (tape-ins, sew-ins, hand-tied), a silk or satin pillowcase is the most impactful single change you can make. It reduces friction by up to 40% compared to cotton, which means less cuticle damage, less tangling, and better moisture retention. Natural silk is the gold standard; high-quality satin is an effective and more affordable alternative.

The loose braid: For longer extension hair worn in semi-permanent methods, a loose braid at the nape before bed contains the length and prevents the tangling that free-hanging long hair experiences during movement in sleep. Don't braid tightly - tight braids create tension at the attachment points.

Satin bonnet: A satin bonnet covers all the hair, protecting the entire length from friction. Better than a pillowcase for protecting the hair closest to the roots and attachment points that a pillowcase doesn't always cover. A good bonnet with an elastic band that doesn't create a dent line in the hair is worth the small investment.

Morning Detangling After Sleep

No matter how well you protect extension hair overnight, some movement occurs. The right morning detangling process minimizes damage from any tangles that formed:

Apply a leave-in conditioner or detangling spray before touching the hair. Start at the ends and work upward in sections. Use a loop brush or wide-tooth comb - never a regular paddle brush on tangled extension hair. Don't rush. A few extra minutes of careful detangling prevents the shedding that aggressive morning brush-outs cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you sleep with hair extensions in?

For clip-in extensions: remove them before sleeping. For semi-permanent extensions (tape-ins, sew-ins, hand-tied): you sleep with them in. Protect semi-permanent extensions overnight with a satin or silk pillowcase, a loose braid at the nape, or a satin bonnet - ideally all three in combination.

Why do my extensions tangle at night?

Cotton pillowcases create friction that tangles extension hair during sleep movement. The solution is switching to silk or satin (dramatically less friction) and containing the length in a loose braid before bed. Hair that's moisturized and smooth tangles less than dry hair - consistent moisture care also reduces overnight tangling.

Is silk or satin better for hair extensions?

Both significantly outperform cotton. Silk is a natural protein fiber with the lowest friction coefficient - the gold standard for hair protection. Satin is a weave rather than a fiber - satin can be made from silk, polyester, or other materials. A high-quality polyester satin performs very similarly to silk at a fraction of the cost. Either is appropriate; what matters is switching from cotton.
