The Oscars for 2022 are over and days later we’re still a little reeling from the wild ride of the evening that will be talked about for years to come. Despite the controversy, the star studded evening had some of the boldest, most vibrant hairstyles we’ve seen in a while. From power ponytails to braided updos, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorites to inspire you for your next occasion, be it a summer getaway or “that special day”.

Zendaya’s Swept Up Updo

Oscar night's arguably most stunning look went to Zendaya whose hair was swept up into a french twist hairstyle. Her hairstylist Antoinette Hill talked to People Magazine about the style, calling it classically glamorous and evocative of old Hollywood and that it accentuates her facial features flawlessly. Zendaya also revealed that for the Red Carpet she did her own makeup, going for a glossy nude lip and silver eyeshadow that matched her floor-length skirt.

Lupita Nyong'o’s Classical African Updo

In a gold sequin gown Nyong'o looked AMAZING with her hair woven up into an elevated beehive that her hairdresser Vernon Francois said was inspired by African figures in classical Greek art. Soft, graceful, and glamorous, the braids matched the movement and energy of hher dress flawlessly with an asymmetric hand-sculpted shape that was completely regal and created the illusion of a longer neck. She dazzled at the Oscars!

Chloe Bailey’s A-Bomb Messy Updo

Chloe SLAYED with this A-bomb style messy updo, teased to voluminous heights. Paired with a metallic smokey eye with delicate baby curls around her hairline. Hairstylist Fesa Mu created the look to complement the custom deep purple split leg gown designed by L.V.D.F. Fesa is known in celebrity circles as a “hair poet”, creating braided hairstyles for Yara Shahidi, Halle Bailey, and Alicia Keys.

Kim Kardashian’s “Wet Hair” Center Part Pony

The "Occasion" Ponytail is still a go-to staple for weddings and runways alike and no one wore it on the Red Carpet better than Kim Kardashian. She dazzled in a form fitting electric blue dress with a massive train, but crowning her look was a mermaid length ponytail, sleeked down with oil for a wet hair look that reached down past her waist. She wasn’t alone in going for the “wet hair” look, as Kourtney Kardashian, the literal queen of wet hair looks. You can easily achieve this look with one of our clip-in ponytail extensions, so easy and elegant!

Naomi Scott went for the wet hair look as well..

And so did Ciara, looking drop dead gorgeous as usual..

Billie Eilish’s 60’s Shaggy Bob

Billie has been known to change up her hairstyle as frequently as her mood, in both color and cut, but for the Red Carpet night she showed up with a jet black 60’s bob with curled, shaggy ends, flicked out at the ends. It was paired with an ultra-ruffled, floor-length, jet-black gown. She not only looked amazing, but when she took home the Oscar she looked absolutely amazing on stage accepting the award. You too can have Billie's style with our clip-in bangs, they're so easy to clip-in and blend with a hairstyle just like hers!

Megan Thee Stallion

Megan had an amazing night, becoming the first female rapper to EVER perform at the Oscars. It was her dress however that made social media viral rounds, a blue form-fitting gown with a cutout and high slit with a long flowing train. Glam cat-eye makeup and a sleek updo bun paired with little swirled baby hairs along her hairline.

Her performance of Disney’s “Encanto” “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” song stole the evening.

Diane Guerrero’s 60’s Hepburn Bouffant

Actress and singer Diane Guerrero who also was on hand to perform the hit song from “Encanto” channeled some old school Hollywood glam with an Audrey Hepburn inspired hairstyle. Her long hair was pulled back with a headband and teased and shaped into a stunning 1960’s bouffant that tumbled down her back with mermaid-like waves.

Recreating Oscars 2022 Hair at Home

"Awards season hair is where you see techniques pushed to their absolute limit - the volume, the sleekness, the longevity required for a 6-hour event. What's useful for everyday extension wearers is understanding the underlying techniques, because the same approaches that create red carpet hair work at any scale."

The Standout Trends from Oscars 2022

Sleek, architectural updos: Precisely constructed low buns and chignons with not a strand out of place. The definition of polished. These styles require significant product, skilled sectioning, and plenty of pins - but the technique is learnable. Extensions add the volume that makes these updos look full and substantial rather than minimal.

Old Hollywood waves: The perennial red carpet staple returned in force. Deep, structured waves with high gloss. A 1-inch curling iron, pin curling while cooling, and a final brush-through. Extensions create the volume that makes waves look full from crown to ends.

High drama ponytails: Sleek, high ponytails pulled to the crown with wrapped base and incredible length. The ponytail as a statement piece rather than a practical choice. Extension hair in the ponytail creates the weight and fullness that makes this style commanding.

Natural texture celebration: Several attendees wore their natural textures - defined coils, bold afros, and natural waves - with the same level of care and intentionality as any of the polished styles. A powerful statement that natural texture belongs on the red carpet. Curly extensions matched to natural patterns and styled with quality curl products supported these looks beautifully.

The sleek middle part: All hair parted precisely in the center and worn bone-straight or in deep waves. An architectural, symmetric look that reads as effortlessly modern. Anti-frizz serum and heat tools achieve this on both natural and extension hair.

Frequently Asked Questions

What were the biggest hair trends at the Oscars 2022?

Sleek architectural updos, Old Hollywood waves, high drama ponytails, natural texture celebration, and the sleek center part were the dominant looks at the 2022 Oscars. Each of these styles is achievable at home with extensions providing the volume and length foundation that makes them look their most dramatic.

How do celebrities keep hair looking perfect for hours?

Layered product application throughout the styling process (not just finishing spray), strategic use of pins and grips for structural styles, quality extension hair that holds up through movement and time, and preparation - most celebrity styles are built on a foundation of perfectly prepared hair before any styling begins. Professional stylists also touch up between events, which is worth knowing when aiming for the same result at home.
