Understanding Your Wig

The entire base of your full lace wig is made from fine lace with individual hairs hand-knotted throughout. This means you need to be gentle everywhere, not just at the hairline. The lace is strong but not indestructible - rough handling, excessive pulling, or heat damage can compromise its integrity.

Washing

Wash your wig every 10-15 wears, or more frequently if you use a lot of styling products or wear it in humid conditions. Before washing, gently detangle using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers, starting from the ends and working up.

Fill a basin with cool to lukewarm water - never hot, which can damage both the hair and the lace. Add a capful of sulfate-free shampoo and swish to distribute. Submerge your wig and let it soak for 5 minutes. Gently swish the hair in one direction (root to tip, never back and forth). Drain the basin and rinse under cool running water until the water runs clear.

Apply a generous amount of hydrating conditioner from mid-length to ends, avoiding the lace entirely. Product buildup on the lace can make it stiff and visible. Let the conditioner sit for 5-10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cool water.

Drying

Gently squeeze - never wring or twist - the hair to remove excess water. Lay the wig flat on a clean towel and blot, then transfer to a wig stand. Using a stand is essential for full lace wigs; it helps the cap maintain its shape and allows air to circulate so the lace dries properly. Allow the wig to air dry completely before styling or storing - this typically takes 4-8 hours depending on length and density. If you must speed up the process, use a blow dryer on the cool setting only.

Detangling and Brushing

Always detangle when the hair is dry or nearly dry. Use a wide-tooth comb or a brush specifically designed for wigs - regular brushes can pull too hard on the knots. Start at the ends and work in small sections toward the cap. When you reach the lace, be extremely gentle. Pulling too hard can loosen or pop the knots, causing shedding.

Heat Styling

One of the best things about human hair wigs is the ability to style with heat. However, always use a heat protectant spray first, and keep temperatures between 300-350 degrees. Higher heat damages the hair over time and can even melt the lace if you get too close. When using hot tools, keep them at least half an inch away from the lace base.

Caring for the Lace

After each wear, check the lace for adhesive residue. If you use glue or tape, clean the lace with a specialized lace adhesive remover - never peel or pick at dried adhesive, which can tear the delicate material. Apply the remover with a cotton swab, let it sit for a few minutes to dissolve the adhesive, then gently wipe clean. For stubborn residue, a soft-bristled toothbrush can help.

If you notice the knots at your hairline becoming visible over time, you may need to re-bleach them. This is a delicate process best done by a professional or with careful research.

Storage

Store your wig on a canvas or foam wig head - avoid styrofoam long-term as it can stretch the cap. If you're traveling, invest in a hard-sided wig case that protects the lace from being crushed. Before storing, make sure the wig is completely dry and lightly detangled.

Maintaining Shine and Softness

Human hair wigs can become dry over time since they don't receive natural oils from your scalp. Use a deep conditioning treatment once a month - apply to damp hair, cover with a plastic cap, and let sit for 20-30 minutes before rinsing. Between washes, a light spritz of wig-specific shine spray or a tiny amount of argan oil on the ends can restore luster.
