Start your hair journey today!
You just purchased your first set of curly hair extensions. They're beautiful. They're full. They're giving you life, and, now, you're wondering, "How do I give them life?"
There are an overwhelming amount of curly hair care products out there. We know it's difficult to sift through and weed the good from the bad. Let us be your hair care product guru! We're going to teach you tips and tricks for extension care while giving you solutions to common hair care problems. So, follow along!
Haircare products in general can be full of undesirable ingredients. When you have curly hair, you have to be even more stringent!
Curly hair is curly, bouncy, and light. That is, of course, if you're staying away from silicones.
Silicones weigh down your beautiful curls. They also can cause massive build-up. If unavoidable, at least make sure they are water-soluble.
You might already know this, but curly hair needs moisture, moisture, moisture. The last thing it needs is sulfates drying it out. Imagine you've put all this work into moisturizing your hair for it to be undone by a product you didn't realize had sulfates in it.
On top of that, sulfates break your keratin bonds down. This will lead to frizzy, tangly hair and extensions. We know you don't want that.
Proteins and alcohol can dry your extensions out. Proteins, specifically, can cause matting and tangling. They're just better to leave out of your products.
When it comes to curly hair, moisture is key. Without enough hydration, curls can quickly become dry, brittle, and unmanageable. In addition, dehydrated hair is more prone to breakage and frizz. To keep curls healthy and bouncy, it’s important to provide them with plenty of moisture.
Avoiding heat tools is one of the greatest things you can do for your curly hair and your curly hair extensions. This will keep your hair shiny instead of dull and moisturized instead of dry. Heat tools can flatten your curls and make them frizzy.
There are several ways to revive your curly extensions that don't involve heat tools. Flexi-rod tutorials can be helpful in that department. So, don't turn to your flat iron.
Does this mean no hairdryer? As a rule, yes, it does, but we'll get into that more later.
In order to keep your beautiful curl pattern, never run a brush through your extensions when they're dry! Worse than frizzing, brushing can cause shedding and breakage.
Finger-brushing from the bottom up is the way to go. If you still can't seem to get the tangles out, try washing your extensions with conditioner only, then use a wide-tooth comb.
When it comes to sleeping with curly hair extensions, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, invest in a good pillowcase. Satin pillowcases are ideal, as they help to prevent damage and keep the hair smooth and frizz-free. Second, be sure to brush the extensions before bedtime to remove any tangles. Finally, use a silk scarf or bonnet to secure the extensions while you sleep. This will help to keep them in place and prevent them from getting tangled during the night.
We've covered the no-no's, and it's time to move on to the products and tools that can benefit your curly hair extensions! In addition to a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, you will want to make sure these things are on your shopping list when shopping online for curly hair care products.
We mentioned above that moisture is key for curly hair. Well, it's even more essential for curly hair extensions because they don't get the natural oils that your hair does.
A good leave-in conditioner keeps your curly hair and extensions moisturized while adding to their lifespan! By doing a little bit of research, you can try to choose one that best fits your curly extensions hair type.
Styling creams and serums offer a great way to lock in moisture and keep out humidity. Grab a silicone-free serum to keep the weather from ruining your hard work and gorgeous hair. In addition, a shea butter or jojoba oil styling cream is a great option to keep your curls defined and moisturized.
Satin Pillowcases, Bonnets, and Scarves Tossing and turning on your pillowcase at night is one quick way to develop a rat's nest of tangles in your hair. Wrap them up in a silk bonnet or scarf to be safe.
A satin-silk pillowcase is also a great purchase for your hair. It reduces friction and is naturally anti-microbial! Your glowing skin will thank you too.
Outside of just the product realm, there are a few more practical tips in caring for your extensions to keep them living their best life. Here we'll get into the key things you can actually do for them instead of put on them.
You knew we had to come back to this hair dryer advice. So, here we are. Care for your extensions can vary based on the kind that you have.
If you are working with clip-ins, lay them flat on a towel to air dry. This will help them to maintain their quality.
If you absolutely must use a hairdryer, use a diffuser! In addition, use the lowest setting your dryer has. Again, this is for moisture but also for frizz reasons.
An absolute must is storing your extensions properly. It's unwise to go to sleep wearing clip-ins.
Gently and very loosely coil your curly extensions into a silk scarf/bonnet and place them in an airtight storage container. Keep the container in a cool, dry area until ready to use again. This keeps them from dust, matting, and moisture, which is the only time we don't want it!
