Learning To Love & Embrace Your Natural Hair Texture

The thing about texture is: even when we’re young we have days where we love it and hate it. Really it’s a lifelong journey, as the frizzy haired days of childhood transition to adulthood as we learn the tips and tricks to not just live with it but ROCK it.

Actress and singer Emmy Rossum said it best recently, “When I was in school, I got there on the first day and everyone had long, blond, straight hair, and I had short, dark, curly hair. I immediately felt I didn’t fit in and started growing my hair. But I’ve learned that I’m only happy when I am truly me and feel comfortable and confident in myself.”

In other words: hair love starts with self love, something that also is a lifelong journey. Singer and actress Queen Latifah said it best, “When I was around 18, I looked in the mirror and said, ‘You’re either going to love yourself or hate yourself.’ And I decided to love myself. That changed a lot of things.”

Once you make the choice to go natural with your hair and let it be its true self, you also have to learn how to manage it and keep it tamed. The first step to which is really identifying what your porosity and curl pattern is so you can understand the unique nature of YOUR curl type.

The reality of it is, your hair has a personality all their own and part of your journey is listening and working with them. Confidence in being able to style, tame and even enhance your hair starts with knowing how to get the look YOU are looking for.

3 Tips For Your Hair-Loving Journey:

  • Find a really great hairdresser who is SKILLED in cutting textured hair. The right haircut can change your entire life, thin things out, debulking, reshaping your curls and even exploring protective styles while growing out your hair.
  • Find other people on the same journey. Our blog is loaded with helpful tips and articles, but we also have staff to help talk you through finding solutions that work for you. Beyond us, there are many Facebook and Reddit groups dedicated to helping Queens learn how to work with their hair.
  • Stop, stop, stop hating yourself. Getting frustrated trying to tame or manage it, looking in the mirror and not being happy with who you see can lead to depression and even anxiety. Your hair is as much a part of you as anything else, it’s just a matter of learning it. You ARE gorgeous, girl!

Learn From These Queens!

Everyone’s Texture Journey is different, so we asked three of our Perfect Locks Ambassadors about their journey and the products they’ve used to be more confident with their hair.

Alexia and the Battle to Control Her Curls

Her hair journey: Keep her curls controlled and healthy

The problem?: Learn more about how to manager her texture, get more volume and length

The products used: Perfect Locks Tape-Ins

  • 22 inch Chocolate Brown (3)
  • 22 inch Toffee Blonde Highlights (4/27) - Pro Exclusive
  • 22 inch Chocolate Toffee Ombre (4/6/27)

“Perfect Locks gave me the confidence to still flaunt my curls while enjoying the length. I feel like a Victoria secret Angel with my perfect locks curly hair tape ins In. I am so glad I found a brand that matches my hair color and my curls so perfectly. No one ever can tell that I have extensions in!.”

Alexia’s Curl Tip: Textured hair often has a naturally open cuticle down to the way in which the hair curls, which means that your hair is like an open window. Good moisture bleeds out on some days or at some times of the year and in others too much dampness and moisture floods in and causes a frizz out. Curls need moisture BALANCE and a lot of it to stay healthy, managed and supple so they can be more resistant to breakage and damage. The important thing as per above is to make sure that heavy product doesn’t build up on your hair and scalp, like layers and layers of icing…weighing down your hair and clogging your hair follicles.

Katy and the Power of Overcoming Hair Loss

Her hair journey: Confidence and dignity with hair loss

The problem?: Katy struggles with Trichotillomania

The products used: Perfect Locks Tape-Ins

  • Wavy 22 inch Rooted Cocoa Ash Blonde (18/613)
  • Wavy 22 inch Caramel Blonde Highlights (24/27/613)
  • Wavy 18 inch Ash Blonde (60)

Katy has been dealing with a disorder called Trichotillomania. A compulsive disorder that causes you to pull your own hair out. A way that helps Katie to stop this are curly tape-in hair extensions!

Some wise words from Katy, “There’s no shame in investing in yourself & finding something that makes YOU feel confident and happy.” Know that you are NOT alone in this & there are so many others dealing with the same struggle. If you or a loved one are dealing with hair loss, we would love to help!

Katy’s Curl Tip: You’d be surprised to know that you can USE heat on curly hair, particularly if you’re trying to create some great bend. The key however is protection, so always use a thermal protector when you're using a diffuser that is cream based. Never use hair or styling oils when using heat as you’ll cook your curls!

Christina and Her Thin Hair Problems

Her hair journey: Working with thin, fine textured hair

The problem?: Getting bouncy volume

The products used: Perfect Crown Hair Topper + Extensions

“To all my fine hair girlies, I’ve struggled with fine/thin hair my whole life. I’m so happy I’ve discovered Perfect Locks that caters to enhancing my thin hair which, I am insecure about. I recently purchased a Perfect Crown as I was desiring length and volume. After becoming a Mom, almost 3 years ago, stress plus covid I had some hair loss/thinning. It was tough to get some volume with the lack of hair/ flat hair I was working with, I was trying different at home methods for hair growth but that didn’t help much so my Perfect Crown has allowed me to not stress so much when it's time to GLAM up and enhance my hair to make me feel so beautiful!💜”

Christina’s Curl Tip: If your hair isn’t very coarse and you want to get big, full, bouncy volume, then know that you need haircare (and ingredients) that are:

  • Lightweight
  • Volume boosting and amplifying
  • Giving you slip without buildup (and weight)
