5 Reasons Most Hair Extensions Won't Last Long

6 Misconceptions About Virgin Indian Hair Reading 5 Reasons Most Hair Extensions Won't Last Long 5 minutes Next Wig Wisely: The Do's and Don'ts of Wigs

To be fair, saying most hair extensions won’t last is a bit of an exaggeration. Even the cheapest set of hair extensions found at the dollar store will last for longer than you’d expect if you take care of them. With that said, there are some hair extensions that will never meet your standards even with the utmost hair extensions care. So, if keeping your long, luscious tresses has been more of a chore than a luxury, let’s find out what’s going on with your human hair extensions.

human hair extensions, hair extensions care

#1: Your human hair extensions aren’t authentic.

Uh oh! There’s nothing worse than forking over a nice chunk of change for high quality human hair extensions only to discover they’re covered with silicone and far from authentic. If this seems like the problem you’re experiencing, do some research.

Internet stalk the company you purchased from, search Google for reviews, and find out what’s really going on. If it turns out that your human hair extensions are synthetic, avoid that company like the plague, tell all your friends, and report them so other ladies don’t have to go through what you have.

#2: You haven’t been using sulfate-free hair care.

The number one rule to making your human hair extensions is to use proper hair extension care products. The first thing to eliminate from your beauty regime is unhealthy hair products. Say no to sulfates, ladies. This is one chemical that is going to strip your human hair extensions of their luscious moisture. So, stick with sulfate-free hair care!

#3: Your human hair extensions are processed with chemicals.

Buying process human hair extensions is like buying organic food that’s been sprayed with chemicals – it simply doesn’t make sense. Unfortunately, there are some companies that sell processed human hair extensions, and the chemicals essentially break down the human hair you paid a higher price for. So, if you can’t seem to keep your tresses looking flawless, this could be the problem.

#4: You place too much stress on your human hair extensions.

Human hair extensions can take a pretty good beating. They have the same properties as your normal hair, so you can dye them, flat iron them, chemical-treat them, sleep on them, swim with them – whatever. However, because they have the same properties as your hair, they will get damaged with too much of anything.

So, if you’re constantly dragging a flat iron through your hair extensions and taking trips to the local salon to change up the color, slow it down just a bit and treat your tresses to some hair extension care.

If your hair regime is too complex for your hair extensions, opt for Remy hair extensions next time.

#5: Your hair extensions are not of Remy quality.

While human hair extensions are higher quality than synthetic versions, not all human hair extensions are high quality. If you’ve ever seen the vast array of price points within the industry, that’s because some are better than others. Of course, with the higher quality ones you do pay more but they also last longer - and remy hair extensions are at the top of the list. Remy hair is the finest quality of human hair that comes with the cuticles intact. They're the best of the best.

So how long do hair extensions last?

It actually depends on the method you use but some only last for a few months. You may also consider their cost, type, and quality. Below are some types of hair extensions and their longevity:

  • Clip-In Extensions: Clip-in extensions can last up to a year or even longer if you do not use them continuously.
  • Tape-In Extensions: These last for about a month or so before they need to be repositioned. Learn the easy ways that will make your tape in extensions last.
  • Sew-In or Weave Extensions: These can also last for a month but may require maintenance as soon as your natural hair grows.
  • Fusion or Bonded Extensions: Each strand can last up to 4-6 months but may last longer if maintained properly.
  • Micro-Link or Bead Extensions: They can last around 6-8 weeks before adjustments are needed.

Your hair extensions may not last long if they are installed incorrectly or are just generally bad quality. It’s important to opt for quality in both the hair extensions, hair extensions care products, and hair stylist you use to install them.  For the first two, we have you covered.
