Priyanka's Thoughts During Women's History Month

A lot can change in 100 years. Over a century ago, it would be looked down upon for women to own businesses, and we have come a long way since then. Madam C.J. Walker, Coco Chanel, Olive Ann Beech, and Ma Perkins are all names of trailblazers who fought their way to success in the face of unfair wages, stigmas, and discrimination. These and so many great women are some of our first female entrepreneurs and today we owe them the debt to not just smash through a ceiling but to pave a road that we all now walk upon.

Since 1987 Women’s History Month is the one month of the year when we stop to think about and celebrate the women to whom we owe so much in our lives and for our businesses. From Abigail Adams to Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, and Rosa Parks…all icons and my heroes.

For me, I think this month reminds us that as women there is so much we do to push ourselves while motivating others; a shared sisterhood forced in great strength, wisdom, and resolve. They also make amazing mentors and sources of information, knowledge, and support, particularly when you choose a career path as a woman in business. My mentor and boss was an architect (of all things), running her own business that she had built from the ground up in Bangalore, India. She started small, grew her company with smart choices, focused on the goal to dominate corporate interior design. She did. Working with her, it was her unstoppable, unflappable strength and dedication while working in a male-dominated society and industry that inspired me.

As I founded and began growing my own business that would become Perfect Locks, I wanted to make sure the gift of honest values I learned from her would translate to a promise to motivate other women and improve their lives. I’ve taken great care behind the scenes here to build a workplace culture built around mutual respect, but also mutual achievement. We frequently share ideas that start discussions here on how we can do more, be more and grow…not just in business, but to be better women, mothers, and ultimately people.

One of my favorite quotes from Indra Nooyi is: “the glass ceiling will go away when women help other women break through that ceiling.”

I’ve shared a lot about my Mom here before and how much I was inspired by her ability to be a working woman, but she always seemed to be there for me when I needed her at home. Striving to lead a balanced life is something I carry forward and am teaching to my daughter, particularly as children watch and learn so much from us. As they say, “Teach your daughters to worry less about fitting into glass slippers and more about shattering glass ceilings.”

This time of the year you should take stock of what you have accomplished, to reflect and be proud of your successes. For me, this past year has been about new ventures, crossing boundaries, and adding something BIG that will rock the world of salon professionals. At home I’ve been pushing myself to go outdoors more, now that the weather is getting better, and finding my happiness in nature. I recently met a group of cyclists  in our community and tried biking for fun to improve my fitness. I soon found out that not only did I love it, but I was great at it! What started as a 5 to 10-mile ride every Sunday morning, has evolved to accomplishing 50 mile rides over the course of 4 weeks. I never realized how far I could push my body until I did…and it all started with a mindset that I could. As I work towards my Half Century Ride, I’ve discovered that little things in life teach you there is no age limit or excuse to how far you can rise…not just through a ceiling but as high as you can dream.

Never be afraid to try new things, take risks and push yourself, because it is when we test ourselves that we discover ourselves.

Much love to all my sisters in business and the mothers and women who helped us find the road.
