Human hair extensions have been around since the days of the ancient Egyptians, but not until the past 10 years have they really become a popular choice for the masses. One of the most popular types of hair to use is Indian hair, but why this particular ethnicity? What makes Indian hair weaves so popular?

When looking at Indian hair, you cannot help but notice how shiny it is. Chemicals are not used to make the hair that shiny; it is a natural attribute along with being naturally thicker, longer, and stronger hair as well. Because of the dark color saturation of the hair itself, the light is not necessarily more easily reflected off the strands than lighter hair, but the light that is reflected is of higher contrast, so the hair gives off a shiny, almost glowing look. In addition to this, straight hair will reflect more light than curly hair as there is more available surface. Since Indian women (and men) generally don’t damage their hair by using chemicals, colors, or irons on their hair, it is in much better health than many other types of hair. It is for these reasons that Indian hair is a most popular choice when it comes to hair extensions.

Virgin Indian Remy hair is the most expensive and in demand type of hair extension available. Simply put, virgin hair is natural, non-chemically treated hair, which means no coloring, no straightening, and no bleaching. The term Remy refers to how the hair was harvested from the donor.  The history of how Indian hair is donated at the temples is very interesting, it involves women and men donating their hair for religious reasons. If the strands of hair were kept together in one direction, the hair can be deemed Remy. If the hair has been harvested in a fashion that allowed the strands to become tangled and flipped end to end, it is no loner Remy hair. The reason behind keeping the hair together and going in one direction is because of the cuticles of the hair. Cuticles are like little scales that cover the hair shaft and allow nutrients and oils to pass through. When looking microscopically at a strand of hair, you can see that the cuticles all flow in one direction down the hair shaft, much like shingles on a roof. When the strands of hair are disrupted, the direction of the cuticles become muddled and the hair becomes ruffled and does not have a clean, sleek look.

Indian hair extensions are also popular because they blend well with many different hair types and, if properly taken care of, will last a long time (often they are reusable for one year or more) and can be styled with irons, hot rollers, or dyed to match different hair colors; this is not an option with synthetic hair. Add to this the fact that Indian hair is so healthy and beautiful, and it is easy to understand why it can be a bit higher priced than other types of hair extensions; it must be viewed as an investment. Because the hair lasts longer than other types of extension by double if not more, and the high quality exists, the cost evens out and is understandable.
