Many of the hair dye's in the market are not regulated by the government for safety concerns, unlike cosmetics. You should be especially careful with both salon and home dyes. A safer alternative to the unknowns at the salon is doing your own hair coloring treatment. If you're only doing highlights then it is likely that your scalp would not come in contact with chemicals, so it's not as much of a concern. If you are doing more than highlights you should do your best to find a chemical free, odor free or herbal hair salon that caters to customers with chemical sensitivity, allergies or cancer. You could also seek out environmentally friendly or "green" salons. Do yourself a favor and just ask your stylist or salon if they are environmentally compliant.
A safe and surefire alternative is for people to do their own coloring at home. This leaves it up to the consumer to research and analyze what hair coloring products are safe to use or not. Roughly 400 out of the 456 hair colors ranked at the Skin Deep cosmetics database of the Environmental Working Group are advised as extremely hazardous. Some of these toxic products can even be associated to cancer, agency toxicity, and can even affect biological functions with the development of allergies and affliction of the eyes, derma or lungs. Luckily, there are safe alternatives, it's just a matter of knowing what's out there and how to use them to your advantage.
Maintaining your colored hair
After your hair is colored, do your best to maintain hair health by using natural and herbal rinses. Certified amoebic chestnut and bulb abstracts can also be beneficial to your hair, they do not contain artificial or harmful chemicals, preservatives, or acrid acerbic chemicals, such as ammonia.
