How to Wear Hair Accessories Glamorously Instead of Looking Like a Kid
Headbands and hair accessories like barrettes, hair pins, and hair clips can be a glamorous addition to any outfit when worn correctly. Hair accessories have been dominating the runways for several seasons now, but they also dominated our elementary school classrooms years ago. They are practical for working out, but ‘practical’ is very different from ‘fashionable’. If you adhere to the following guidelines, you’re sure to look like a sophisticated fashion maven instead of a woman confused about what’s appropriate for her age.
When it comes to hair accessories, size definitely matters. Oversized bows and flowers look childish- particularly in an office environment. Keep it simple with a skinny leather headband during the day, or dress-up a nighttime look with a thin crystal band and chignon or bun.
Balance Feminine Hair Accessories with Darker Make-Up:
If you’re going to wear an accessory made of tulle or chiffon, the shape of a flower or bow, in a shade of pink or other pastels, balance out your ultra-feminine hair with darker make-up. A smokey eye is an instant way to ‘grow-up’ this look.
A Simple Bobbi Pin Can Multi-Task as a Fashionable and Functional Accessory:
Until 2012, we usually tried to hide bobbi pins in our hair. Then Cacharel showed us that bobbi pins do more than just hold hair in place: they can be a fashion statement of their own. When painted and grouped together, bobbi pins look like an intentional fashion statement- not a fashion solution.
Tiaras Are Never Acceptable:
It doesn’t matter that a tiara or two appeared at the Spring 2013 show of Oscar de la Renta; leave that look to royals and runways. Unless Paris Hilton is your style icon, this is not a look you want to emulate.
Instead focus on looking glamorous and well put together. Even though hair accessories are fun to implement, be selective with what you purchase. Less is more and if you have a bold hair accessory in your hair, it’s a good idea to keep your outfit simplistic and classy. Show off your skinny headband with pride, but do it without looking like a kid or unfashionable adult.
